Creative Duos

In a lot of work environments you often work alone, but often will encounter a group or team setting. A group of individuals come together and though they each have their own part, as a whole they make up a team. You may even have partners, in a law firm, or perhaps in a creative agency, and maybe those partners started the firm or agency. In thinking about all of this I realized that this is also true in the fashion and photography industries. Many labels are by individuals, but there are plenty of designer duos as well, Dolce & Gabbana, Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler and of course Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen with their labels The Row and Elizabeth & James.

Inez and Vinoodh

You might often think of photography and other creative fields as being more of an individual pursuit, one person focused on his/her art, ideas and vision.

However, there are also a number of photography duos: Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are well-known fashion photographers who have been partners since 1986. The duo shot Lady Gaga for the latest V magazine cover, which you can check out here.

Another famous fashion photography duo is Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, who have know each other since 1994.

They shoot regularly for most high fashion magazines as well as celebrities and luxury labels.

I think it must be interesting to work with a partner in a field such as photography, on the one hand it could be helpful to have someone you trust around to collaborate with, but on the other, what happens when you just don’t share the same vision for a project?

Are there other creative teams you like?
